Offensive Tactics and Strategies in Basketball
Offensive strategies are applied to counter various kinds of defensive tactics imposed by the opposition,to make advancement up the court possible and to get open shot eventually to score goals.but for getting desired results, teams have to adopt a suitable offensive tactic and must ensure the perfect execution of the strategy. There are many kinds of offensive strategies,a team can select any strategy of their own choice, depending on the comfort of the team.
Fast Break
Fast break is a basic offensive strategy, used by most of the teams. In fast break offense,a team attempts to push the ball quickly up the court before defense gets in to its position.Players run at high speed make quick passes, communicate with each other to understand the plan of action and make adjustments if needed, when a player with the ball reaches the free throw line,he quickly decides his next step, whether he wants to continue driving to himself take a shot or he wants to pass the ball to his teammnate,in short, fast break offense requires agility, speed, stamina, ball handling skills, decision making power and better understanding between players. There are many variations in fast break offense like 2 on 1,3 on 2 ,2 on 2 ,3 on 3,4 on 4 even 5 0n 5,depending how many offensive players are running on the court.
Pick and Roll
Pick and roll is a basic offensive strategy in which an offensive player stands in the way of that defensive player, who is responsible for guarding another offensive player(ball handler). The ball handler starts to make a move, while at the same time other offensive player slips behind the defender to accept a pass. In this situation, defender gets confused and remains undecided in making a choice on whom to cover. If he chooses the ball handler, then other offensive player will gets a chance to move toward the basket and if he tries to guard the other offensive player, instead of ball handler then the player with the ball gets an open shot.
Give and Go
Give and go ,also known as “pass and cut”,is a basic offensive tactic. In this strategy, one offensive player passes a ball to his teammate, hoping to unguard himself and runs to an open area generally near the basket to receive the ball back from his teammate. This strategy works well when defender concentrates more on ball instead of the offensive player who runs after passing the ball.
Triangle Offense
Triangle offense is a complexed offensive strategy,in which the offensive players are placed on one side of the court with an offensive player on low post,a player on corner and one on wing, making a sideline triangle and remianing two players form a two man game on weak side. This strategy creates a good spacing about 15 to 18 ft between players and makes passing easy for players. The main objective is to pass a ball to a strong side low post player to create an easy scoring opportunity. This tactic is vey useful agianst man to man defense.
Isolation Offense
This strategy is designed to bring out the talent of the best offensive player on a team.It gives that big player a chance to play his own game,he gets a ball, creates his own shots and passes and takes on defender one on one.In isolation all offensive players accept the assigned one moves to the weak side of the court, bringing their defenders with them and maintaining a minimum distance of 10 to 15 ft from the best offensive player on a team. When the strong side is cleared out,the offensve player starts dribbling and creats scoring oppotunities for his side.
Princeton Offense
This offensive strategy is aimed to slow down the pace of a game, mostly applied by less athletic teams to deal with the teams which have super athleticism. The features of this tactic are control on ball, constant motion, dribbling, high number of passing,3 point shooting, back door cuts and disciplined teamwork. The most conventional scheme in princeton is 4-out with 1-in, in this scheme four players set up outside the 3 point arc and one player inside at the top of the key.As this scheme aims to slow down the tempo of the game,if often results in low scoring affairs.
Shuffle Offense
This tactic is preferably used by the teams which consist of quick, active and smaller players, not having any big strong player. It involves constant movement of the players on the court, rotation of positions and good ball handling skills(especially sharpness in cutting and passing). The original set up is one player on point, one player on strong side wing, one on corner, one on the elbow(high post) and remaining one one the weak side, this tactic is effictively used against man to man defense.
Flex Offense
The basic idea of flex offense is quite similar to shuffle offense. According to this offense, the players are not bound to perform a specific role, their reponsibilies are multiple and interchangeable. For this offensive strategy, versatile players are required which can block, cut, pass, dribble, shoot and they should know how to play together as a single unit. This tactic work well against man to man defense.
