Types of Jump Shots in Basketball
Jump shot is the most frequently used shot in basketball. As its name suggests, it is made while jumping in the air. The basic teachnique involves a leap in the air, upward arm stretch and release of the ball in the mid air. This shot can be made from anywhere on the court but it gets harder and harder to execute properly every time when the distance between the basket and the shooter incresases and a player needs more strength and accuracy if he aims a jump shot away from the basket. This shot can also prove extremely effective when the shooter is closely guarded by a defender. In such situation, a shooter jumps off and pushes the ball over the defender towards the basket but if a taller defender is infront of the shooter then he can block it with ease. Jump shot has many types and following are some of the most common types used today.
Fadeaway/Fall Away jump shot
Fade away is perhaps the most difficult of all the jump shots but conversely, it is impossible to block if done correctly. In this kind of shot, player releases the ball forward while jumping backwards away from the defender. Before a player perform this shot actually on the court, he needs to have a command over it. This shot results in the collapse and and an ackward landing can cause inuries to a player.
Step Back jump shot
Step back is another popular yet difficult shot to expert. It is basically used by a shooter to create a distance between himself and the defender. The shot is made in such pattern: player drives the ball up the court, as soon as he comes close to the defender, he takes a step aside to create enough space for unleashing the ball. But he also makes it sure that it must not count as travelling.
Pull up jump shot
The main motive behind this shot is to make the defender off balance by driving the ball towards the basket and suddenly stopping. As a result, a defender loses his control and now a shooter can make an easy shot. This shot is for those players who can not beat defenders with their speed. In other words, who are not quicker or faster than their defenders. It is most effective near to the basket and becomes highly risky if made outside the key area.
Turnaround jump shot
This shot is made in the low post when shooter is quite close to the basket. Initially, he had his back to the basket but when he decides to shoot, he turns around and jumps straight up to score a basket. Usually, a shooter does not have much time to perfectly execute such jump shot . If he hesitates for a fraction of a second than it means that a chance is gone out of the hand.
