Early Growth and Development of Basketball
Basketball gained instant popularity and soon became a major nation wide sport.YMCA played a major role in the expansion of the game.
The first proper basketball was played in YMCA gymnasium on 20 January,1892 between two teams from YMCA Training School.
In the same year Senda Berenson Abbott,a teacher from Smith College,Massachusetts introduced the game of basketball to woman.First woman intercollegiate basketball game was played on April 4,1896.
Geneva College,Pennsylvania,formed the first men,s college basketball team,played first game on 10 December,1893 and defeated New Brighton YMCA 3-0.
The first intercollegiate game was played between Hamline College and School of Agriculture,Minnesota on 9 February, 1895.School of Agriculture won the game 9-3.
The first college basketball game with 5 players per side was played between the University of Iowa and University of Chicago on 18 January 1896.
But the game played on 10 December 1896 between Wesleyan University and Yale University is considered to be the first official intercollegiate basketball game.
From there on,basketball started to flourish,many colleges showed a great amount of interest in the game and organized their own basketball teams.
FORMATION OF NCAA
IAAUS(Intercollegiate Athletic Associaton of United States)was established in 1906 to prevent the sport from unfair tactics. In 1910, the association was replaced by NCAA(National Collegiate Athletic Association).NCAA organized the first basketball championship on 1939.Initialy 8 teams participated in the championship and those teams were Villanova,Brown,Ohio,Wake Forest,Oklahoma,Oregon,Texas and Utah State. In the first game Villanova met Brown on 17, March and sealed a 42-30 victory.The final was held in Illinois between Oregon and Ohio.Oregon beat Ohio by 46-33 and lifted the first NCAA basketball championship title.
