The Most Dominant Teams in the History of Basketball
There are some teams which played better basketball more often than not, won the games more constantly than others, piled up new records and made a name for themselves. Here are the teams which ruled the world of basketball, they are undoubtedtly the most dominant teams in the history of basketball.
Original Celtics
Original Celtics was an out standing professional basketball team of 1920s. The team started its operation in 1914 mainly as an barnstormer (an independent team which travels around the country and makes money by playing against local teams and then moves to its next destination) under the name of New York Celtics. The team was disbanded during the World War 1. At the end of the war, two brothers Tom and Jim Furey reassembled the team but this time around with a new name The Original Celtics.
Original Celtics competed in few loosely organized basketball leagues besides playing independently, they dominated the world of basketball so heavily that their win ratio was almost 90 percent. The reason of their constant success was their big performers like Dehnert, Nat Holman, Joe Lapchick, John Bechman, George Haggerty and Davey Banks. In 1921, the team entered the Eastern Basketball League and dominated the league, then took part in Metropolitan Basketball League. In 1926 they appeared in American Basketball League, remain victorious in two seasons and adopted a new name Brooklyn Celtics.
Original Celtics proved to be a trend setter in many ways, they introduced zone defence and post play, promoted aggresive defencive play and it was happened for the first time, that the players were contracted to avoid the switching of players from one team to another. The team is also credited for expanding the game of basketball through out the United States of America.
Philadelphia SPHAs
Philadelphia SPHAs (South Philadelphia Hebrew Association) was another prominent barnstorming professional basketball team, created by Eddie Gottlieb, Harry Passon and Hughie Black in 1917. That big crowd puller team participated in three leagues Philadelphia League, Eastern Basketball League and American Basketball League. Firstly competed in Philadelphia League where they won two consecutive championships, then in 1925 they found a place in Eastern Basketball League, won three titles over their, later on, joined American Basketball League in 1933 and captured seven titles in the league. Philadelphia SPHAs was arguably one of the best professional basketball team ever. The journey of the team came to an end in 1948.
Buffalo Germans
The team Buffalo Germans was formed in 1895 on Buffalo’s east side, an area largely populated by German-Americans. The team is reckoned to be a great team in the early day’s of basketball, mainly because of its unbelievable record of 111 straight wins from 1908 to 1911. The team firstly became the center of attention in 1901 when it won the Pan American Exposition tournament. Then in 1904 olympics, the team won a gold medal in the mens basketball category. After olympics, the team started to play professionly, traveled across the country but never became a part of pro basketball leagues of that time. The team was disbanded in 1925.
New York Renaissance
New York Renaissance was an outstanding professional basketball team, purely made up of African-American players. The team was organized in 1923 by Robert Bob Douglas in collaboration with the owners of Harlem Renassiance Casino and Ball Room. The Rens set a unique record of winning 88 consecutive games, another outstanding team Original Celtics ended that winning streak. Rens was the first ever team to become a champion in world basketball tournament.
New York Ressaissance was claimed to be a best basketball team of its time but the team was often treated quite badly by the crowd both on and off the field and also faced discriminatiory behaviour by the administrations of pro basketball leagues. On March 21, 1949, the team played a game against Denver Nuggets in NBL, it was the last game of the Rens.
Harlem Globetrotters
Harlem Globetrotters is another great African-American basketball team, created by a person named Abe Saperstein in 1929. The team was credided for bringing entertainment in the game of basketball, they introduced incredible ball handling skills and unusual moves in the game. At the same time, it was a very serious competitive team, the team beat a top NBA basketball team Minneapolis Lakers for two years in a row (1948-1949) they also won World professional Basketball Tournament in 1940. The team Harlem Globetrotters is still alive and kicking.
Boston Celtics
Boston Celtics is a popular NBA team, formed by Walter A. Brown in 1946. The team plays in Atlantic Division of Eastern Conference. In earlier stages, they played theis home matches in Boston Garden, since 1995, TD Garden is their home arena. Boston Celtics dominated the NBA for a long period of time, the team won 17 NBA championships, the most by any team playing in NBA, alongwith 20 division titles and 21 conference titles. From 1958 to 1965, Boston Celtics won 8 championship titles in a row. Legends like Bill Russell, Bob Cousy, Chuck Cooper, Bill Sharman and John Havlicek were some of the great names associated with this great basketball team.
Los Angeles Lakers
Los Angeles Lakers is a professional basketball team, based in Los Angeles California, a team founded in 1947 under the ownership of Ben Berger and Morris Chalfen, initially known as Minneapolis Lakers, then in 1960 turned in to Los Angeles Lakers. The team won their first NBA championship in 1948. They became NBA champion for 16 times, second in the list of NBA champions just behind Boston Celtics. Players like George Mikan, Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul Jabbar helped in making the Los Angeles Lakers a dominant team in the history of basketball.
Chicago Bulls
A popular NBA basketball team, created by Dick Klein (former pro basketball player) in 1966. In 1995-96 season, Chicago Bulls created a record by winnig 72 games in a season. Till 1970s the team was generly regarded as a team with defensive approach but the arrival of Michael Jordan in mid 80s changed the fortunes of the team. He made Chiacago Bulls a highly competitive team and also helped in making NBA a popular league all over the world. The team became NBA champion for 6 times. Trio of Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen and Coach Phil Jackson led the team to win all their 6 championships in NBA. In all 6 occasions Michael Jordan received the MVP (most valuable player) award.
