Russell Westbrook Alone has More Triple-Doubles than Most of the NBA Franchises
Russell Westbrook is truly in a league of his own when it comes to triple-doubles. No current NBA player can match his ability to produce triple-doubles not even all the players of an NBA franchise combined.
Russell Westbrook has recently crossed the milestone of 100 career triple-doubles, which means he now has more triple-doubles than 23 active NBA franchises today. According to ESPN, only the Sacramento Kings (267), Los Angeles Lakers (258), Boston Celtics (203), Philadelphia 76ers(140), Golden State Warriors (128) and Brooklyn Nets (104) have more collective triple-doubles than Westbrook.
Russell Westbrook had a triple-double against every franchise in the league, except his own team Oklahoma City Thunder. That is not a small feat and it has never been accomplished before. Westbrook currently sits fourth in all-time list of triple doubles, trailing only Oscar Robertson (181), Magic Johnson (138) and Jason Kidd (107). He needs just five more to surpass Jason Kidd’s career triple-double record.
But Russell Westbrook was not always the player we know today. He gradually build his reputation as an individual to record triple-doubles at a prolific rate. Coming into 2014-15 season, Westbrook had just eight career triple-doubles. He finished the 2014-15 season with 11 triple-doubles and had 18 the following season. Last year, he even broke the record for most triple-doubles in a season, 41 set by legendary player Oscar Robertson in 1961-62 season. No one came close to his mark for more than 50 years. He also averaged a triple-double throughout the season and was also awarded NBA’s MVP.
This year, Russell Westbrook has notched 23 triple-doubles so far and is head and shoulder above the rest of the players. By the look of things, he can get a few more triple-doubles under his belt before the season ends.
