With no labor deal, NBA cancels first two weeks of regular season
The first two weeks of the NBA regular season have been canceled as the labor deal issue remained unresolved between the owners and the players union.
NBA commissioner David Stern announced the cancellation on Monday after owners and players could not reach to a new agreement. Stern also indicated that there is no chance of a full 82 game regular season. Now teams are expected lose about six to eight games.
After more than seven hours of negotiations, meeting in New York ended without a new collective bargaining agreement. Stern said both sides are “very far apart on virtually all issues. … We just have a gulf that separates us.”
The regular season was scheduled to start on November 1 but now there is no possibility that it will began before Nov. 15.
NBA sides agree to meet with federal mediator Tuesday
The NBA’s owners and players union will meet with a federal mediator on Tuesday to resolve the deadlock. George H. Cohen, the director of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, will oversee negotiations between the sides and help them to reach a labor agreement. Cohen was the same mediator who tried to resolve the NFL’s labor dispute earlier this year and both sides are hopeful that he had an ability to move the sides toward a deal.
Stern expects more games to be canceled if no deal Tuesday
NBA commissioner David Stern believes further cancellations are coming. He indicated that the regular season games on Christmas may be canceled if there is no labor agreement by Tuesday.
On that day, owners and players are scheduled to meet with a federal mediator.
If we don’t make it by Tuesday, my gut — this is not in my official capacity of canceling games — but my gut is that we won’t be playing on Christmas Day,” Stern said.
Romanian man arrested in killing of US basketball player
A man was arrested on Monday in the killing of basketball player, Chauncey Hardy. He was punched in the face by the boyfriend of a woman in a bar on Saturday night after he playfully put his cap on woman’s head.
Woman’s boyfriend Ionut Adrian Tanasoaia objected to the gesture, then allegedly punched Hardy on the chin and he fell to the ground. Hardy was admitted to the hospital but he died shortly after surgery on Sunday as he sustained severe head injuries.
Tanasoaia surrendered to police and will be in custody for 29 days while he awaits trial.
