In the game of basketball, the positions and responsibilities of the players are not specified and fixed. Positions are flexible, even interchangeable to some extent. Multiple jobs are assigned to every player, keeping in mind the abilities of the opposition and it is make sured that all the player contribute well in the overall strategy of the game. However, there are 5 typical player positions in basketball.
Point Guard:
- Generally the shortest and the fastest player on the team.
- Possesses a control on dribbling, passing and out side shooting skills.
- Acts as a leader and a team player, supposed to have the abilitiy of decision making and also directing the players.
- Advances the ball up the court and makes sure that right moves are made at right time and the ball goes in the hands of the right player.
Shooting Guard:
- A shorter and a faster player on the team but usually taller than a point guard.
- Expected to be a good passer and long range shooter, efficient in ball handling and rebounding skills.
- The best player of out side shooting and more often than not the top scorer in a team.
- Takes the ball close to the basket for creating more scoring opportunities.
Small Forward:
- Taller and quicker than guards but not as big as power forward.
- Known for ball handling,passing, long range shooting, close range shooting, defence and rebounding abilities.
- The most versatile player in the team. His height, agility and strength enables him to perform a number of roles.
Power Forward:
- Power forward is the biggest player after center. A physically strong and aggresive player.
- Primarily responsible for rebounding and defence, also good in shot blocking and short range shooting.
- Mostly stays close to the basket and helps teammates in scoring points.
- Covers opposing power forward in man-to-man defence.
Center:
- The biggest, tallest and the slowest player in the team.
- Deals with inside shooting, getting rebounds and blocking the shots. Rarely dribbles and hits a long range shot.
- Stays around the basket and scores close to the basket.
- Teams heavily depend on their centers for the successful execution of their offensive and defensive plans.
