Duration of Basketball Game
Playing time of a basketball game depends on the level of competition.
A basketball game organized by International Basketball Federation, consists of 4 quarters (periods) of 10 minutes with 2 minutes gap between each quarter.
The allotted time of a NBA game is 48 minutes, split into 4 quarters of 12 minutes but normally it takes a much longer time to finish an NBA game as there are so many interruptions and delays involve in a game.
A college (NCAA) game lasts about 40 minutes (2 halves of 20 min).
A high school game is divided into 4 quarters of 8 minute each. Its total duration is 32 minutes.
In WNCAA time limit is similar to men,s NCAA. WNBA also follow men,s NBA in terms of time regulation.
The duration of half-time interval is 15 minutes in FIBA, NBA and NCAA competitions but in high school level, the length of half-time is 10 minutes.
The time of a basketball game begins with the opening jump ball when the ball is tapped by a player in the game. In a basketball game, various types of interruptions occur, affect it a lot and cause to stop a game many times. With the stoppage of game, the clock is also stopped. Various reasons make a game stop like fouls, violations, jump ball, out of bounds, time-outs etc.
If game ends in a tie, then a 5 minutes overtime is allotted to both sides, to convert a tie into a proper result. In high school level, the length of overtime is 3 minutes. If the score still remains tie, then another overtime period is provided,until the game results in favor of one team.
