5 Most Memorable Game Winning Shots in NBA History
A game winning shot is always a treat to watch, no matter how many times it has been replicated. It’s a shot that is taken in the closing moments of the game when a team is either tied or down by some points. Then, out of nowhere a player from trailing team shoots a buzzer beater and gives his team an unlikely win.

1. Michael Jordan’s “The Shot” (1989 Playoffs First Round, Game 5)
Michael Jordan produced many game winning shots in his career, but this shot went down as the best. It came in the game 5 of the 1989 playoffs first round against the Cleveland Cavaliers when Bulls were trailing by 2 points and only three seconds were left in the game. Michael Jordan took an inbound pass from Brad Sellers and hit a spectacular jumper to win both the game and the series. This stunning game winner was dubbed as”The shot”.
2. Magic Johnson’s Baby Sky Hook (1989 Finals, game 4)
It was the game 4 of the 1987 final series and Boston Celtics was leading with 106-105 . The clock was down on three seconds, Lakers’ Magic Johnson drove the ball in to the lane and drilled a hook shot about 12 feet from the basket, giving Los Angeles one point edge. Larry Bird took the last chance to save the game with only two seconds remained and tried to hit a three pointer but it missed and Lakers won the game 107-106, courtesy of the Baby skyhook by Magic Johnson.
3. Robert Horry’s Three-pointer (2002 Western Conference Finals, Game 4)
In the game 4 of 2002 Western conference finals, Lakers were trailing 99-97 against the Sacramento Kings. They would down 3-1 in the series if they lose that game. Every one was expecting players like Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal to do the job for the Lakers. But it was the Robert Horry who stole the show and sank a three pointer in the final second of the game. Lakers eventually won the series and also their third consecutive NBA championship.
4. Vinnie Johnson’s Buzzer Beater (1990 Final Series, Game 5)
Pistons were leading the 1990 finals series 3- 1 against the Portland Trail Blazers. In the 5th game, Blazers had a chance to bounce back. But Pistons Vinnie Johnson was thinking otherwise.The game was tied at 90-90 and the time was ticking away. With only 0.7 seconds remained, Vinnie Johnson launched a 14 foot jumper that went over the Jerome Kersey and straight into the basket, giving Pistons a win and NBA title.
5. Derek Fisher’s 0.4 second jumper (2004 Westren Conference Semifinals, Game 5)
Lakers were taking on Spurs in the 2004 Western Conference Semifinlas and the series was tied at 2-2. Spurs were on the verge to win the game 5 as they were one point ahead and only 0.4 seconds left in the game. But Lakers Derek fisher turned the tables on Spurs by swishing an 18 foot buzzer beater. The jumper send Spurs back home and Lakers to the conference finals.
