5 Worst Free Throw Shooters in NBA History
A shot attempted from free throw line seems easiest to be made and it has to be because there is no rush, no one is going to interfere and a player can take his time while aiming a shot. Despite all of that, some players struggle badly in free throw shooting. They miss a lot of free throws while make very few. Here we take a look at all those players who had real problem in free throw shooting and who could not rectify their problem throughout their career. Here are the top five.
1. Wilt Chamberlain
Surprisingly, some of the best players in NBA history are worst in free throw shooting and one of them is Wilt Chamberlain. A player who holds many scoring records, obviously shot well from other parts of the floor but he made only 51.1% from the foul line (made 6,057 of 11, 862 free throws). It means he could not convert about 5,000 of those 12, 000 free throws. Imagine, if he had about 75% of those then what kind if career points he would end up with (Wilt Chamberlain missed a total of 5, 805 free throws which is most by any NBA player).
2. Shaquille O’Neal
Shaquille O’Neal made 5,935 and missed 5,317 free throws in his career that makes him only the second player alongside Wilt Chamberlain to miss more than 5,000 free throws. No one expect 80% percent free throw shooting from a center because centers mostly play near the basket and shoot from short range. But just 52.7 career free throw shooting percentage is too low by any standards.
3. Ben Wallace
If 1,000 free throws is considered the minimum criteria, then Ben Wallace is the player who got the worst free throw percentage in NBA history with mere 41.7%. He is neither a shooter nor an impressive scorer like Wilt or Shaq but he is a prolific rebounder and shot-blocker which we mainly expect from center or power forward.
4. Chris Dudley
Chris Dudley was notorious for being an extremely inconsistent free throw shooter. His 45.8 free throw percentage is second worst ever. Moreover, he holds some awful free throw records as well that suggest how terrible he was in free throw shooting. On January 29, 1989, Chris Dudley could not convert any five of free throws awarded to him in single trip to foul line and became the first player to have such horrible record. Then on April 14, 1990, he missed 13 consecutive free throws in a game against Indiana Pacers, that is most by any NBA player in a game. In that same season, he had the league’s all time worst free throw shooting season when he averaged just 31.9. He made 58 of 182 free throws.
5. Dwight Howard
Dwight Howard is often criticized for his poor free throw shooting ability especially when he misses many freebies during a game and team lose that game too. It is a fact that these free throws have an impact on the end result of game. Dwight Howard realizes its importance too. That’s why he is working on his free throw shooting technique ever since he has joined the Lakers. Let’s wait and see when his efforts will pay off.
