Box Office Hits by Basketball Players
To be honest, there are not too many hits on the credit of basketball turned actors. More often then not on court superstars remain unsuccessful in bringing their charm or charisma on cinema. Still, there are some films that did well at box office because of the contributions of the hoopsters.
Conan the Destroyer
The starring role of Arnold Schwarzenegger and the supporting one of Wilt Chamberlain made Conan the destroyer a financial success. The film earned 31 million through its release in domestic theaters while internationally; it grossed over 69 million dollars. All cast in the movie performed well, especially, Wilt Chamberlain did a good job in the villainous role.
The Game of Death, Airplane
Kareem Abdul Jabbar acted in a martial arts based movie, the game of death. His role was not been the leading one but still values a lot. His fighting scenes with legendry Bruce lee are something unforgettable. The film was a box office hit in Hong Kong, it grossed HKD 3,436,169 over their. Game of death was not the only successful film by Kareem, his movie airplane was also a hit. The movie did a business of $83,453,539 at USA box office and was regarded as a best movie of 80s.
Space Jam
The film featured Michael Jordan and the Looney Tune characters. Despite all the criticism on Michael Jordan’s acting, space jam had a successful run in theatre. It grossed a total of $250,200,000 ($90,463,534 in United States and about $159,736,466 on international box office).
Blue Chips
Though Shaquille O’Neal acted in few other films as well (Kazaam, Steel, Scary Movies 4 etc) but Blue Chips was the only one that did some sort of respectable business at box office. The cameos from some real life NBA players also helped movie in grossing $22,355,000.
He Got Game
It can’t be considered a big hit or a blockbuster by any stretch of imagination, but certainly a watchable movie as far as acting is concerned. NBA player Ray Allen did a supporting role in the movie and shared the screen with Denzel Washington. Both received wide critical acclaim for their strong performances. The movie did a decent business and made $21,567,853 in United States.
