Top 10 Teams With Most Wins in a Single NBA Regular Season
This list is simply about those teams who won most of the games and lost very few in NBA regular season and set the best regular season records. Most of the teams, who topped the regular season standings, played convincingly throughout the playoffs and went on to win the championship, except three occasions. The following are the teams who managed to achieve the record for most wins.
1. Chicago Bulls 1995-96 Season (72 wins and 10 losses)
It was a memorable season for the Chicago Bulls for two reasons, one for the comeback of the Michael Jordan and secondly, for registering an amazing regular season record of 72-10, best by any team in a single regular season. The team kept the winning momentum in the playoffs as well and won its forth championship by beating Seattle SuperSonics 4 games to 2 in NBA finals. Michael Jordan was named the most valuable player and NBA finals MVP. He also led the season in individual scoring.
2. Los Angeles Lakers 1971-72 Season (69 wins and 13 losses)
Lakers stormed through the regular season with a record of 69-13, best in NBA until Bulls broke it in 1995-96 season. They continued their dominance in the playoffs, knocking out Bulls, Bucks and Knicks respectively and went on to win the championship.
2. Chicago Bulls 1996-97 Season (69 wins and 13 losses)
It was another exceptional season for the bulls. They won a total of 69 games out of 82. Once again, it was the Michael Jordan leading the Bulls to their fifth overall championship and second in a succession. After defeating Washington Bullets in first round, Atlanta Hawks in eastern conference semifinals and Miami Heat in conference finals, Bulls faced Utah Jazz in championship finals. After 4 games, the series was tied with two games apiece. Before the all important 5 game, Michael got sick. Despite all the illness and fatigue he played the game and scores 38 points in 44 min of play and won the game for bulls. The sixth game was also won by Bulls as a result they claimed the series and the championship.
4. Philadelphia 76ers 1966-67 Season (68 wins and 13 losses)
It was the time when players like Wilt Chamberlain, Chet walker, Hal Greer and Billy Cunningham were the members of the team. The team won 46 out of their first 50 games of the season; it is the best record by a team for the starting 50 games in a regular season. The team finished the season with a total of 68 wins. Chamberlain led the team to win the championship. He could not get the 8th straight season leading scorer title but he received the NBA finals MVP award for his overall contributions.
5. Boston Celtics 1972-73 Season (68 wins and 14 losses)
Boston Celtics won 68 games while lost just 14 en route to the playoffs. In the conference finals, they competed against New York Knicks. After six games, series was squared with 3 games each. In the seventh game Knicks crushed the Celtics and their hopes too.
6. Boston Celtics 1985-86 Season (67 wins and 15 losses)
Celtics controlled the proceedings of the regular season. They posted a 67-15 record and lost only one game at home (40-1). Their performance was impressive in the playoffs as well. They swept Chicago Bulls in three straight games, then defeated Atlanta Hawks in eastern conference semi, thrashed Milwaukee with 4 straight wins in conference finals. Lastly defeated Houston Rockets and won the championship
6. Chicago Bulls 1991-92 Season (67 wins and 15 losses)
At that time, Michael Jordan was playing at his full strength. Along with some other players, he compiled a record of 67 wins in regular season and guided the Bulls through to their first ever win in the league. Jordan was declared not only the most valuable player and NBA finals MVP but he also the topped the scoring in the season.
6. Los Angeles Lakers 1999-2000 Season (67 wins and 15 losses)
Los Angeles Lakers accumulated 67 wins in the season, 25 in the first 30 games, and then rattled off 16, 19 and 11 game winning streaks. They included themselves among those few teams in NBA history that strung 3 different double figure winning streaks in same season. In playoffs team got troubled many times by different oppositions. In the western conference finals the were on the verge of the defeat as they were trailing by 13 points heading towards the forth quarter against Portland Trail Blazers but they bounced back and won the conference finals and eventually went on to win finals against Indiana Pacers by 4-2 and became a champion for the first time since 1988.
6. Dallas Mavericks 2006-07 season (67 wins and 15 losses)
Mavericks won record 67 games, the most in the franchise history and registered three double figure winning streaks during regular season. Despite all the success in regular season, Mavericks struggled badly in the playoffs. They entered the playoffs as the top seeds but surprisingly they could not pass even the first round of the playoffs and lost to the eighth seed Golden State Warriors.
10. Milwaukee Bucks 1970-71 season (66 wins and 16 losses)
It was just the third season for the new team Milwaukee Bucks but in the league they played like a champion side. They started the season with a win against Atlanta Hawks and finished the season off with 66 wins. Like season they also dominated the playoffs. In the finals, they defeated Baltimore Bullets in four straight games and won the first and only championship in franchise history.
10. Boston Celtics 2007-08 season (66 wins and 16 losses)
It was the most successful season for the Celtics since 1986. They started the season on a high note, won 8 games straight and entered the new year with 26-3 record. They won overall 66 wins and lost only 16 on their way to the playoffs. They faced tough opponents in the playoffs but managed to secure a tiltle in NBA after 22 years.
10. Cleveland Cavaliers 2008-09 season (66 wins and 16 losses)
Cavaliers started the season strongly by posting 25-6 record in the initial two months of the season. They finished the season with franchise best record 66-16. In the playoffs, they defeated Pistons and Hawks in first round and eastern conference semifinals respectively but lost to the Orlando Magic in the conference finals by 4-2 and went out of the championship contention.
