Top 7 Triple-Double Leaders in NBA History
A triple- double is achieved when a player gets 10 or more score in three out of the five categories during a single game. These five categories are points, assists, rebounds, steals and blocked shots. Here are the all- time NBA leaders in triple doubles.
1. Oscar Robertson 181
Oscar Robertson leads the all-time list with 181 triple doubles. He played 1040 games in his career and tallied 26, 710 points, 9,887 assists and 7,804 rebounds. During 1961-62 season, he accomplished an amazing feat that has only been achieved twice throughout the NBA history. Robertson averaged a triple- double for the entire season with 30.8 points, 12.5 rebounds and 11.4 assists. He also recorded 41 triple- doubles the same season, second best by any player in NBA history.
2. Magic Johnson 138
Magic Johnson had 138 regular season triple- doubles that place him at second spot in all time list. He played 905 games and compiled 17707 points, 6559 rebounds and 10141 assists in his career. He might be second in terms of the regular season triple- doubles but in playoffs he is head and shoulder above the rest of the players with 30 triple doubles in 190 playoff games.
3. Jason Kidd 107
Jason Kidd sits third in the list of most career triple-doubles. He notched 107 triple- doubles in 1315 games,. His first triple double came in the first season of his career but not before the 69th game. Since then he had a triple double for 17 consecutive years, from 1995 to 2011, which is an NBA record.
4. Russell Westbrook 102
There have been many great players in this list but not many with the ability of Russell Westbrook. The player has made a lot of history in this category. As he is still active in NBA, he is expected to increase his overall tally in the next few years.
5. Wilt Chamberlain 78
In 1045 games Wilt chamberlain had 78 triple- doubles. He also owns a unique record of 25 points, 22 rebounds and 21 assists in a game against Detroit on Feb 2, 1968. With this record, he became the only player in NBA history to have a double triple double (20 or more in any three categories). The record for consecutive triple doubles is also held by Chamberlain, he notched nine back to back triple doubles from March 8 to 20, 1968.
6. LeBron James 71
LeBron James is slowly but surely creeping up the list of all time triple double leaders. So far he has achieved 71 triple doubles in his career. He is the second youngest to score a triple double in NBA. At the age of 20 years and 20 days, he had his first triple double against The Trail Blazers, on Jan. 19, 2005.
7. Larry Bird 59
In 897 games, Larry Bird posted a total of 59 triple-doubles, along with 10 playoffs triple doubles. He spent 13 years in NBA, all with Boston Celtics and scored 21791 points, 8974 rebounds and 5695 assists with an average of 24.3, 10.0 and 6.3 respectively. With his on court versatility, he was always considered a triple-double threat and recorded a triple-double every 15. 2 games.
