FIBA(International Basketball Federation)is an independent association responsible for organizing international basketball competitions.

In the game of basketball, the positions and responsibilities of the players are not  specified and fixed. Positions are flexible, even interchangeable to some extent.

A high quality collective effort is required to perform well in a team sport like basketball and a collective effort demands a total commitment on the part of every individual and a firm grip on basic skills.The basic basketball skills are:

Dribbling:

 Bouncing the ball up and down with finger tips while moving ahead is a complexed but a very important skill.Dribbling is a legal way to control a ball  and to keep it away from the reach of  the opponent.

Playing time of a basketball game depends on the level of competition.

A basketball game organized by International Basketball Federation, consists of 4 quarters (periods) of 10 minutes with 2 minutes gap between each quarter.

A hard, flat, smooth, highly polished and rectangular shaped court is required for playing  basketball. The surface of Basketball court is usually made of wood or maple and it also vary in sizes.

The rules of basketball have been changed considerably over the years, therefore today the game of basketball is not the same as it was used to be in the past. Some rules have  remained the same, some have been changed to a certain extent and some new rules have also been inserted in the game, all these things make basketball a little bit complicated.

With the passage of time, the level of interest in basketball was bound to increase, therefore commencement of so many professional basketball leagues was not a surprise indeed.

Basketball gained instant popularity and soon became a major nation wide sport.YMCA played a major role in the expansion of the game.

The first proper basketball was played in YMCA gymnasium on 20 January,1892 between two teams from YMCA Training School.

Basketball is a professional indoor team sport. A physical education instructor James Naismith introduced the game of basketball in1891.James Naismith was a Canadian, born in Ontario, on November 1861.He studied at the Mc Gill University, Montreal. Later on, he served as an Athletic Director in Mc Gill University.
