Every year many trades have been made in NBA. Naturally, every franchise wants to get a good result from the trade but not always they have their wish come true. Some times franchises made such exchanges which look lopsided even from the outside and ultimately they prove costly for the team.
Here are seven trades that deserves to be called worst in NBA history.
1. Wilt Chamberlain trade from Philadelphia 76ers to Lakers (1968)
The Sixers just won a championship in 1967, primarily with the help of Wilt Chamberlain. Next year on 6 July , they made a terrible decision when they traded Wilt Chamberlain to Lakers in exchange for three players: Jerry Chambers, Archie Clark and Darrall Imhoff. All three players never delivered the 76ers. On the other hand, “The Big Dipper” continued to prosper even in the twilight of his career and went on to win one more championship with the Lakers.
2. Kareem Abdul Jabbar trade from Milwaukee Bucks to Lakers (1975)
Though Milwaukee Bucks could not be blamed much for trade since it was made purely on the request of the Kareem. But the trade clearly halted the progress of the Bucks. They sent Kareem and Walt Wesley to the Lakers and got Junior Bridgeman, Dave Meyers, Elmore Smith and Brian Winters in return. The players they received in the trade were effective for the Bucks to some extent but no one could take the team to the level which was achieved by Kareem Abdul Jabbar.
3. Nets sold Julius Erving to Philadelphia 76ers (1976)
Some unavoidable finincial issues forced New York Nets to sell their key player Julius Erving to Philadelphia, a player who have won two championships and three MVP titles in five years with them. The acquisition of Erving proved beneficial for the The Sixers as they made four final appearances and also won a championship with Julius Erving on roster. But Nets could not gather themselves after the departure of Julius Erving and returned to New Jersey after performing worst in 1976-77 season.
4. Philadelphia 76ers sent Charles Barkley to Phoenix Suns (1992)
Charley Barkley was dealt to Phoenix Suns for a pack of three incomparable players Jeff Hornacek, Tim Perry and Andrew Lang. Many viewed it a risky and bad deal but Philadelpina management was confident about their decision. Actually, both parties, the Sixers and Charles Barkley were sick of each other. Barkley was not happy with the management and management was annoyed with his erratic behaviour and self-centered approach. But the time proved that it was a wrong move by the sixers as they could not reach the playoffs for the next six years. While, Barkley enjoyed four productive years with the Suns.
5. Cincinnati Royals trade Oscar Robertson to Milwaukee Bucks (1970)
Cincinnati Royals traded Oscar Robertson to Milwaukee Bucks in 1970, at the time when he just came off a steady season scoring average of 21.8 per game. He joined Kareem Adul Jabbar in the Bucks and brought them their first and only championship title in 1970-71 season. Royals got Flynn Robinson and Charlie Paulk as a result of the deal. But they traded them the following season when both showed no significant effect.
6. Kevin Garnett from Minnesota to Boston Celtics (2007)
Kevin Garnett spent 12 impressive years with the Minnesota before he got traded to Boston Celtics. Minnesota received seven players, in what was to be the largest and only deal in league history when seven players were traded for a single player. Even such a blockbuster deal could not put Minnesota over the top. Instead, it went well for the Garnett and he won the only championship of his career with the Boston Celtics.
7. Pau Gasol to Los Angeles Lakers (2008)
Before 2008, Pau Gasol was the part of Memphis Grizzlies, an under performing team, where he contributed massively to whatever success they achieved since his arrival. Despite holding records in almost all major statisticall catagories for the Grizzlies, they traded him to Lakers in exchange for a bunch of players, out of which no one could deliver for the Grizzlies.
After joining Lakers, Pau Gasol was paired with Kobe Bryant and the dynamic duo went on to win two back to back championships in 2009 and 2010.
