The allotted time for an average NBA game is 63 min but various kinds of delays and stoppages make it hard to end a game within the regulation time. Normally, it takes more than double time to complete a game. Following is the list of those marathon games that pushed into the multiple overtimes (more than three overtimes) and became the longest games in the history of NBA.
Indianapolis Olympians vs. Rochester Royals, 1951
On January 6, 1951, Indianapolis Olympions played a game against Rochester Royals. It turned out to be the longest game in NBA history as it lasted for 6-overtimes. It was a relatively low scoring game which ended on the win of the Olympians over Royals by 75-73.
Syracuse Nationals vs. Anderson Packers, 1949
The second longest game was played between Syracuse Nationals and Anderson Pakers on November 24, 1949. After 5-overtimes, Syracuse pulled off a win over Anderson packers in a closely fought game (125-123).
Milwaukee Bucks vs. Seattle SuperSonics, 1989
The game between Milwaukee and Seattle on November 9, 1989, was the second game in the league history that went into fifth overtime. After having an even score 105-105 in the regulation time, the game was decided in overtimes and the result went in favor of Milwaukee Bucks ( 155-154)
Boston Celtics vs. Syracuse Nationals, 1953
On March 21, 1953, Boston Celtics defeated Syracuse 111-105 in a 4-overtime game and swept Syracuse 2-0 in East Division Semifinals. It was the longest playoff game in the history of the NBA.
Portland Trail Blazers vs. Cleveland Cavaliers, 1974
About 20 years later, Portland and Cavaliers played a game on October 18, 1974. The game also went into the fourth overtime and ended in the favor of portland (131-129).
San Diego Conquistadors vs New York Nets, 1975
It was one of the longest and highest scoring games in the history of ABA. The game was held at sports arena on Feb. 14 1975 where San Diego Conquistadors defeated New York Nets 176-166 in four overtimes.
Cleveland Cavaliers vs Los Angeles Lakers, 1980
On January 29, 1980, the game between Cavaliers and Lakers completed in four overtime periods. Lakers lost the game to the Cavaliers 154-153. Ironically, Lakers went on to win the championship while Cavaliers lost five straight games after this big game.
Atlanta Hawks vs Seattle SuperSonics, 1982
Atlanta Hawks played two quadruple overtime games in their franchise history. The first game took place on February 19, 1982 where Hawks defeated Seattle with 127-122.
Chicago Bulls vs Portland Trail Blazers, 1984
It was the first quadruple game for the Blazers since 1974-75 season. In that game, they emerged as the victoriouss but this time around they were defeated by Chicago with a minor margin of one point 156-155.
Golden State Warriors vs New Jersey Nets, 1987
The seventh quadruple game in the league history was played on February 1, 1987 between Warrriors and Nets. The game ended with the score of 150-147 in favor of Warriors.
Phoenix Suns vs Portland Trail Blazers, 1997
It was the third overall quadruple game in the Portland history. They played the game against Phoenix Suns on November 14, 1997 who knocked them off 140-139 in the fourth overtime.
Atlanta Hawks vs. Utah Jazz, 2012
This was the ninth quadruple game in the league’s history. The game was played on March 25, 2012 in Philips Arena. Hawks and Jazz dragged the game into the fourth overtime after tying the score in regulation time. In the end, it was the home team Atlanta that outscored the Jazz and win the game 139-133.
